What Kind of Leader are You?

“You’re a natural born leader.” I’ve heard this type of compliment directed towards me before. However, until taking a recent course called Art of Creative Leadership (AoCL), put on by More To Life (moretolife.org), I wasn’t fully confident that I was deserving of the acknowledgement.

I had judgements about what a leader must look like. I judged myself critically and when I put myself up against this expectation, I didn’t match up. During the course of AoCL a concept on leadership styles brought it together for me and helped me clear my harsh criticism of myself. Leaders can lead from the front, the side and the back. A successful leader can shift where they lead from making their skill more accessible and appropriate to the context in which they are leading.

I naturally lead from the side. I’m the leader that is putting in just as much blood, tears and sweat as my team. I’m confident in my team’s abilities because I’ve been right next to them witnessing their skills. I’m currently in a role as Training Supervisor for the July 20-22 More To Life Weekend in Huntsville. (for more info visit http://moretolife.org/mtl_weekend.cfm) This role has challenged me to step up and lead from the front more often. I also see how I will also lead from the back. I empower my team (especially the very experienced team members) to step into their roles and make decisions without running each item by me or the leadership team. It is a true test of flexing my muscles in trusting!

Each year I take various courses offered by the More To Life program and support teams that create the trainings. Since I took my weekend the summer of 2008, I have used the skills and processes to support my professional growth, strengthen my personal relationships, improve my health and connect with authority about who I am and what I want from life. Sounds like an experience you want a part of?
